Crime is the breach of rules or laws for which some governing authority (via mechanisms such as legal systems) can ultimately prescribe a conviction. Individual human societies may each define crime and crimes differently. While every crime violates the law, not every violation of the law counts as a crime; for example: breaches of contract and of other civil law may rank as "offences" or as "infractions". Modern societies generally regard crimes as offenses against the public or the state, distinguished from torts (offenses against private parties that can give rise to a civil cause of action).

When informal relationships and sanctions prove insufficient to establish and maintain a desired social order, a government or a sovereign state may impose more formalized or stricter systems of social control. With institutional and legal machinery at their disposal, agents of the State can compel populations to conform to codes, and can opt to punish or to attempt to reform those who do not conform.

Authorities employ various mechanisms to regulate (encouraging or discouraging) certain behaviors in general. Governing or administering agencies may for example codify rules into laws, police citizens and visitors to ensure that they comply with those laws, and implement other policies and practices which legislators or administrators have prescribed with the aim of discouraging or preventing crime. In addition, authorities provide remedies and sanctions, and collectively these constitute a criminal justice system. Legal sanctions vary widely in their severity, they may include (for example) incarceration of temporary character aimed at reforming the convict. Some jurisdictions have penal codes written to inflict permanent harsh punishments: legal mutilation, capital punishment or life without parole.

The sociologist Richard Quinney has written about the relationship between society and crime. When Quinney states "crime is a social phenomenon" he envisages both how individuals conceive crime and how populations perceive it, based on societal norms.

The label of "crime" and the accompanying social stigma normally confine their scope to those activities seen as injurious to the general population or to the State, including some that cause serious loss or damage to individuals. Those who apply the labels of "crime" or "criminal" intend to assert the hegemony of a dominant population, or to reflect a consensus of condemnation for the identified behavior and to justify any punishments prescribed by the State (in the event that standard processing tries and convicts an accused person of a crime).

Often a natural person perpetrates a crime, but legal persons may also commit crimes.

How much crime do illegal immigrants actually commit in the US?
Q. This is a serious question! I really don't know and I'm looking for statistics. Personally I think that illegal aliens probably have a higher crime rate than the US average but not much higher when you account for income and geography. If I was an illegal than I would try to be as honest as I could because I don't want any contact with the police or legal system if I can help it. I think that is a reasonable attitude so I think that many illegals think the same too. What do you think?

A. Well, for one every illegal is a criminal. They are commiting crimes just by being here. Here is some other info: From the L.A. Times 1. 40% of all workers in L.A. County ( L.A. County has 10.2 million people) are working for cash and not paying taxes. This was because they are predominantly illegal immigrants, working without a green card. 2. 95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens. 3. 75% of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens. 4. Over 2/3 of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal, whose births were paid for by taxpayers . 5. Nearly 25% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally . 6. Over 300,0 [cont.]

What was the actual crime for which Nelson Mandela was convicted?
Q. We've just had a statue to him unveiled in London, and one of the people near me in the crowd watching this, referred to something that sounded like a 'Rivonia' trial. I have cheked this on the Net, but the references to the actual 'crime' are too vague.

How do crime rates in the UK differ between the races?
Q. Are there reliable figures comparing the crime rates between different racial groups? Particularly figures comparing the races and the rate at which they commit different categories of crime. Nadz - they shouldn't differ because of the population size. I am asking about crime *rates*. El Capitan - that is a very good point. Is there any statistical analysis of the crime rates of the races comparing similar socio-economic groups?

A. Surely its more about how poor people are rather than what race they are? The majority of British people from African/Caribbean backgrounds are from working class backgrounds. Surely its more about how poor people are rather than whether they are White, Asian or black surely? I mean after all, crimes are still committed by people from White and Asian backgrounds aren't they? There are still many people from African/Caribbean backgrounds who don't commit crimes as well. It is just because the first thing the media see in a person is what race they are from and this is what they point out. Immigrants from poorer countries tend to be poor when they move to the UK as well. You hardly hear any Japanese British people commit crimes because… [cont.]

Crime in the field of sociology is the breach of a rule or law for which some governing authority or force may ultimately prescribe a punishment. The word crime originates from the Latin crimen (genitive criminis), from the Latin root cernō and Greek κρινω = "I judge". Originally it meant "charge (in law), guilt, accusation".

So long as every institution of today, economic, political, social, and moral, conspires to misdirect human energy into wrong channels; so long as most people are out of place doing the things they hate to do, living a life they loathe to live, crime will be inevitable, and all the laws on the statutes can only in crease, but never do away with, crime.
