What are the signs of rotten rockfish specifically from Alaska?
Q. Hi, my dad and me are wondering what rotten rockfish meat looks like. About 6 months ago a friend gave us some rockfish meat from Alaska and we put it in the freezer. Today we're asking ourselves if eating it would be a good idea. The meat looks orange/yellowish but we don't know if it is like that or if it is rotten. Does anyone know?

A. I have allot of experience fishing in Alaska and freezing my catch and hauling it all over. Rockfish are no different from any other fish - if it has a bad odor, there is a problem. No odor - no problem. 'Freezer Burn' happens when something is in the freezer and the door is opened and closed - allowing moisture to 'flash off' the surface of the product. To store fish longer than a few months - wrap it in plastic wrap and then again in paper wrap. Rockfish come in many colors - especially bright orange and red! Sounds like your fish is fine - and the pigment from the original fish color is coming out. Believe me - if the fish were rotten - you would NOT have to ask anyone. Rockfish have 'texture' - they have flakes and taste… [cont.]
